Artemis Provides The US With Laser Protection For Armoured Vehicle Periscopes

Artemis Optical, leaders in the design and manufacture of bespoke optical thin film coatings, is providing a leading US defence supplier with laser protection for a US armoured vehicle. This contract forms a $1m, three-year partnership to provide filters for around 400 platforms, which will protect personnel against laser threats to the vehicles’ periscopes.

The laser protection filters safeguard the occupants of military vehicles from high- powered lasers used on the battlefield. The military relies on these products to protect the vision of its soldiers from harmful light sources which are common on the battlefield. By the end of the year Artemis will have delivered 600 filters.

Artemis is the only independent, non-US company to have approval to supply these parts to the US military, and it is now celebrating 20 years of that approval. The company have supplied these products to governments globally and, amongst others, they can be found on all frontline UK MOD vehicles as well as those in France and Norway.

Nick Hurst, CEO of Artemis Optical, said: “Artemis has a long and established history in supplying laser protection filters to the US, UK and other governments worldwide. I believe that we can rightfully consider ourselves as world-class in this area and think that this contract is testament to the faith placed in Artemis products.”

“Contract awards such as this one allow Artemis to continue with our projected growth in our aerospace and defence business stream whilst enabling us to leverage our expertise in this area to branch out to crossover technologies in the medical and analytical markets.”

Artemis’ 22,000 square foot purpose-built facilities include a 16,000 square foot environmentally controlled production laboratory and a range of modern coating chambers. Artemis has the capability to manufacture neutral, colour selective and amplitude graded combiners.
